n the west coast of Norway, and thought that would be suitable for our j
urney, but it showed to be too old and "crispy" It hadn`t been in the water for the last 15 years, and been in the sun for the last two years.
Last winter I bought another used boat. Made in fiberglass and just ideal for our purpose, it was a replica of a real faering, but it has floating tanks and is much stronger and safer. It was brought home to Horten last February and we were lucky enough to get it stored in an old carpenter shop were we could do all the work on it.
The planning of the trip has been going on for a long time. Many books have been read, a lot of I - mail pages have been copied. Last fall my wife and I drove north, along the river from Memphis TN all the way to Lake Itasca MN.
At the "Headwaters" the river is to shallow for us to start. That is why we are starting at Lake Bemidji. From there I hope we shall be able to make it further down the river, even if there are some places we have to portage because of falls and rapids. If it will be too difficult to manage by our own, we have to really on a helping hand from some of the locals.
We have a time limit of 90 days to make it all the way south. Many things can happen so we are quite realistic and agreed to the fact that we are going as far as we can in 90 days. There are several reasons for that but mainly because of American visa - regulations and orders of plane tickets back home.
A lot will depend on the weather and many other small things, but most of all it will be our own conditions that will decide whether we are gone make it or not.
